What’s Included?

This course includes expert-led, hands-on training delivered in a workshop environment, use of mechanical maintenance tools and equipment, and all required learning materials. Participants complete practical exercises covering common maintenance activities.

This course is suitable for beginners, apprentices, or individuals involved in mechanical or maintenance activities who need to develop a basic understanding of mechanical systems and safe maintenance practices. 

Assessment

  • Assessment is practical and continuous, based on safe working practices, correct tool use, and participation in mechanical maintenance tasks throughout the course.

A cancellation fee of 30% will be charged for cancellations within 24 hours of the course date. Failure to attend without notice will result in a full charge.

Course Content

  • Workshop health and safety, including standard operating procedures

  • Safe use of tools and equipment, including inspection for damage

  • Use of hand tools (spanners, screwdrivers, hammers, saws, files, taps and dies, drills, torque wrenches)

  • Basic fitting practices and component preparation

  • Bearings, shafts, and shaft alignment

  • Keys, keyways, and fastening and locking devices

  • Drive systems, including belt and chain drives

  • Machine guards and their applications

  • Fault identification and fault diagnostic processes

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Work safely in a mechanical workshop environment and follow standard operating procedures

  • Inspect tools and equipment to ensure they are safe and fit for use

  • Use a range of hand tools correctly and safely

  • Apply basic fitting techniques when preparing mechanical components

  • Fit shafts, align components, and work with bearings appropriately

  • Install and secure components using keys, keyways, and locking devices

  • Understand and maintain common drive systems, including belt and chain drives

  • Identify the purpose and correct use of machine guards

  • Identify, diagnose, and confirm common mechanical faults

  • Carry out basic dismantling, repair, and assembly tasks safely and effectively
