Our History: Shaping Engineering Excellence

At EKGTA, our journey spans decades of dedication to engineering training and workforce development. Since our establishment in 1966, we've evolved alongside industry demands, pioneering innovative training methods and fostering collaborations with leading employers.

1964

Origin of Group Training Associations

The Industrial Training Act (1964) established a framework for industrial training. This lead to the creation of Group Training Associations (GTAs) to address skills shortages by pooling employer resources to deliver industry leading technical training.

1966

Foundation of EKGTA

East Kilbride & District Engineering Group Training Association (EKGTA) was established as part of the national effort to develop engineering skills and provide accessible, high-quality training to the industry.

1973

Incorporation of EKGTA

EKGTA is officially incoroprated as a company limited by guarantee and Registered Charity from October 1973. This formalised our governance structure and allowed us to expand our training offerings and cement ou commitment to our member companies and the wider engineering community.

1980s

Collaborative Training

During the 1980s, EKGTA focused on strengthening our collaborative approach supporting local employers in upskilling their workforce to meet Scotlands growing industrial demands.

1990s

Modern Apprenticeships

The introduction of the Modern Apprenticeship scheme in 1993 allowed EKGTA to broaden our competency-based program to meet evolving industry standards. During this period, we received recognition from industry for for high success rates while meeting increased demands for CNC machining and Electrical Engineering.

2000s

New Ways of Learning

EKGTA introduced electronic portfolios and project-based training, creating a more practical and modern approach. These innovations ensured apprentices developed real-world skills aligned with industry standards and employer expectations.

2010s

Expansion and Milestones

EKGTA expanded its facilities with purpose-built, modernised workshops and advanced equipment. In 2016, EKGTA celebrated 50 years of service marking a half-century of delivering high-quality engineering training while supporting employers and industry across Scotland.

2020s

Adapting and Innovating

EKGTA embraced remote learning during the pandemic, ensuring uninterrupted training. Apprentices achieved prestigious awards, highlighting organisation's commitment to excellence.

2024

A Year of Milestones

EKGTA launched 'The Academy', achieving SQA approval to deliver Further Education level qualifications in-house. This marked a significant step in expanding our blended approach to Vocational and Academic larning.
